It reads :
ONLY SELECT POTATO varieties make the cut.
They say its wrong.... some say its right.
WELL GUESS WHAT
I just made a huge fool of myself once again saying that this sentence is wrongly constructed.
This sentence IS actually CORRECT AFTER ALL.
Thank you to David Tse for telling me that.
On the other hand....
Curse you Khoo Shi Hao who gave me the idea of posting this up online.
Now Ive made a total fool outta myself on the internet... sigh

Look at the US fry packaging - Because only a select number of potato varieties make the cut. That's why it sounds so weird - 'cause someone tried to shorten the sentence but, well,...

(Copied from facebook. I'm sorry I'm quite an English vigilante)
ReplyDelete:/ I'm not sure if this is ignorance to English or what... But select has always been used as an adjective. Definition for select: adj. carefully or fastidiously chosen; exclusive (e.g. a select group of friends) It actually makes less sense if they use the word selected. Selected has a connotation of being chosen; select has the same connotation but it carries the meaning of special and exclusive. Nice try though....
From another point of view the sentence doesn't make sense.
ReplyDeleteIf ONLY select potato varieties make the cut, then those ROSAK potatos of the chosen variety would be considered OK and would be used too i.e. rosak or not rosak, it's ok but if it's not a good variety it's not ok. Which completely does not make sense since a business will obviously use only certain types of potatoes/cabbage/whatever in their products. You can't take them all. Another reason why McDonalds fries may not be that superior.
Don't know if the way i write it makes sense, but the sentence used is rather stupid-sounding to me.
